The Vianney Foundation is inspired by St. John Vianney, whose life exemplifies selfless service. Born in 1786 in Dardilly, France, St. John was inspired by clandestine priests during the French Revolution and pursued religious studies, despite many obstacles. He was ordained in 1815 and became the parish priest of Ars, where his devotion to his parishioners and the poor earned him widespread admiration. His deep faith in St. Philomena, who he credited with his recovery from illness, further highlighted his spiritual dedication.
St. John Vianney’s belief that “The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, he is for you” resonates deeply with our mission to support retired priests. Just as he dedicated his life to serving others, we strive to honor his legacy by caring for those who have devoted their lives to the priesthood.
Declared venerable by Pope Pius IX in 1873, beatified by Pope Pius X in 1905, and canonized on May 31, 1925, his feast day is celebrated on August 4th, recognizing him as the patron saint of priests.
